Visiting Family During the Holidays

One of the biggest arguments that couples can have every holiday season is over which one's family they will be visiting. A fair solution depends on individual circumstances. If one family is nearby and you visit them regularly, the fair solution is to visit the further family for those special occasions. If one's family is large and the other is an only child, visiting with the family that would otherwise have no celebration would be the kindest solution. Another option is to visit one family for Thanksgiving, and the other for Christmas.

Yet another option is to offer to host the celebrations and invite both sides of the family. Alternatively, if both families are far away and travel expenses are an issue, tell the families that you can't afford the trip, and celebrate on your own, possibly with nearby friends and neighbors who can't be with their families for the holiday, either.

If you do travel to visit with family, but know that space, comfort and privacy will be issues, consider staying in a hotel that is centrally located to various family members and friends. If you have an RV, using it to travel to visit relatives could also solve these problems. If you don't have an RV, but are considering buying one to travel in when you retire, this could be the perfect opportunity to try out the lifestyle for a few days by renting one in which to visit with family. Solicit your respective family's input to help you solve this dilemma in a manner that will satisfy everyone.

Senior Discounts While Traveling

Traveling can be very rewarding and fun, but it can also be rather expensive. One of the rewards that comes with aging and retirement is often the ability to travel. There are a number of methods to travel, and discounts are available for many different things.

Seniors that plan to travel by air should be sure to alert the airline ahead of time that they are 62 years old or older. In most cases they will get a 10 percent discount off published fares. Periodically there are organizations that provide special flight discount coupons that are also very valuable in reducing the flight costs. Traveling by train can also provide discount travel. ViaRail will provide seniors discounts, including two-for-one tickets.

Many hotels have discounts available for senior travelers that can really save the pocketbook. The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) offers a number of hotel chain discounts. Take the time to research these benefits because some of the discounts are available only with advance reservations. Many hotels also offer continental breakfast as a free service to the folks that spend the night. Any of these types of free things are well worth the stay. An added bonus for discounts is the offer of discount coupons to many of the area attractions when you stay at particular hotels. Do not hesitate to inquire about available discounts whenever you travel.

For those travel adventures that have seniors traveling by car or motor home, take the time to stop at each states’ welcome center. Not only is it nice to stretch your legs a bit, but there are generally coupons galore inside the center that will provide discounts for restaurants and attractions, as well as hotels. This would be a great place to find the national parks that can be used for camping and offer senior discounts.

Senior Travel Destinations

As the summer is just around the corner, there are many places that you can escape to as a senior and enjoy a relaxing vacation. Some of the best places to visit in US are Pigeon Forge, Branson, and Conner Prairie.

Pigeon Forge is located in Tennessee and is an affordable travel destination. Particularly on the weekdays, you can do a great deal. The thing that has made it famous is Dollywood, which is an amusement park. If you love nature, there are a lot of activities to do like fishing, hiking, horse riding, etc.

Conner Prairie is a museum with great historical value located in Indianapolis. This museum is good for all ages. Young children can have a great time by doing things like walking on stilts or chasing the chickens into their coop. Adults can learn interesting things like woven carpeting or identifying different kinds of pelts prized by fur traders. If you'd like to visit the museum in April, it will be opened everyday of the week except Mondays and Tuesdays. Starting in May, for nearly six months Conner Prairie will be opened Tuesdays through Sundays.

Branson is located in the Ozark Mountains. It's the place with the most theaters in proportion with the population. You can choose between concerts, dinners shows, or magic acts. Another good thing about this place is that there are various senior discounts applied to many places.

A good place to visit in Ireland, Europe is the Belfast Murals. These murals show about the conflicts in the past between the nationalists and unionists. The best way to see these murals is by taking a taxi tour.

Traveling a Joy for Retired Couples.

Many couples now have the time and economic resources to experience the joy of traveling. There are many ways to enjoy travel. One of the most popular for seniors are cruises. Another whole group of seniors enjoys Recreational Vehicle travel. Still others prefer travel with a tour company. More attention is being given to how couples should prepare for travel when retirement begins. The North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement offers a three-day Path to Creative Retirement seminar.

This seminar helps a couple to combine the visionary with the practical. It also informs couples about the many retirement services that are available to them. There are certain anxieties that accompany a transition from one chapter of life to another. This seminar helps couples to formulate an action plan. Money magazine has a senior editor, Walter Updegrave. He gave a detailed response to a question addressed to him by a woman who stated: "Although we're (my husband and I) compatible in many ways, our outlook differs when it come to enjoying our money." This could be an obstacle to experiencing the joy of traveling. Only 38 percent of married couples make decisions together about their retirement finances.

Many couples don't agree on what style of life they expect to live after retiring. The Money Magazine editor offers three suggestions to make a Retirement Dream Reality check. The first is to envision your retirement. The Second, assess your financial resources. The third, collaborate on (some) spending. Disagreement about discretionary spending causes problems for some couples. Hopefully many seniors will be able to truly experience the joy of traveling. Planning is one of the keys to this joy.

Visiting Family During the Holidays

Holidays are a time when most families think about getting together to visit each other, and although travel can sometimes be stressful most people look forward to seeing those loved ones that they have not seen for some time.

It is sometimes difficult to visit everyone that you would like to get together with over the holidays, and this is especially true if families are living a great distance apart or in other states. When you have relatives on both sides of the family, trying to visit both sides of the family can make the holidays somewhat stressful, and feelings can get hurt or misplaced. The weather also plays a factor to the visitation plans.

Planning ahead of time is the best way to make the holidays more enjoyable and comfortable. Knowing where you will spend your time, or dividing time between family members will make everyone happier. If there is not enough room to accommodate everyone who will be getting together, then other options should be considered, such as staying in a hotel, staying in an RV, or staying with other friends or family.

If your trip includes taking pets along, you should have the courtesy to let the family members know that you are bringing a pet, and find out the best way to accommodate your pet while you are there. If there will be a problem with the pet, then you should make other arrangements for a kennel or someone to take care of the pet while you are away. Most holidays visits are exciting and very enjoyable, but then sometimes they can also be very unpleasant if the family members have unresolved issues.
