Traveling with the Snowbirds

There are some seniors who look forward to the winter months because they know that they are going to be going some place where it is warm. In fact, they might even have a cruise planned for the entire length of the winter months. These seniors will close up their homes at the first sign of the cold weather. Some of them have summer homes in the warmer climates and go there. They will spend the winter months at their vacation or summer home, and not worry about the snow back home. There are other seniors who like to spend their time traveling all over the world.

It is more than just a get a way, it is a way of life for them and they plan for it well in advance. You will find married couples who visit the same place every year. You will also find divorcees and single seniors who join clubs that are just for those who want to travel and meet new people.

Whatever the case, it is a growing business for the travel agencies who specialize in serving the seniors. They have all of the particulars taken care of and make sure that each one has the stops on their trip that are of most interest to them. The agency will plan each activity and every stop so they will enjoy themselves and come back the following year. They know that a satisfied customer means more business for them because that senior just might tell a friend and pass the word along.

Saving For Future Travel

Everyone looks forward to retirement, mostly because they hope to travel. Whether that means driving cross-country to see your grandchildren or taking a cruise around the world, you will need some money. How much money depends on your destination. A rule of thumb is that you’ll need 70% of your annual pre-retirement salary to live comfortably or more if you plan to travel. First, you must be realistic about your routine expenses. Your mortgage may be paid off and your commuting expenses reduced, but health care costs will probably rise.

You already have your budget for most of life’s necessities as well as some luxuries, so why not budget for retirement travel? Of course, travel costs can change from year to year, but it makes sense to envision a trip you’d like to take and estimate the cost. Then divide the cost by the number of months you have until retirement. This should give you an approximate idea of how much you’d like to set aside monthly to finance the trip of your dreams. Some people are satisfied to put their pocket change in a jar every day, while others establish a goal such as $100/month and put it in a separate savings account.

They say half the fun of a trip is getting there. You might equally say half the fun is planning the trip. Many couples make a hobby of collecting books and brochures about their dream destination. It can also be fun to research cut-rate air fares and hotels.

Saving for a trip in the future can be difficult but there are ways to make it fun. For instance, instead of dining out, have dinner at home and set aside the money you save in your travel account. Instead of going to a movie, save the money and take turns talking about the places you’ll see. There are dozens of ways to save now and enjoy the future.

Visiting Family During the Holidays

There are many people who like to travel during the holidays. Many times you can stay at a relative's house if there is enough room. If there isn't then you should stay at a hotel. You can spend time with them during the day, and then you could go to your hotel room at night. You could help to cook at a great meal, or maybe you could help them with gift wrapping so that the kids will not see the gifts. Maybe you could take the kids and go to the mall, that would be a treat for both of you.

There could be some special functions that you want to attend. Maybe they like to go to church and you can go with them, or you can be the one that goes to church and you can take them with you. When you visit your family you should always keep your mood positive. Your kids are watching you so you need to keep things on a positive note. If you are stressed out then your kids will probably feel the same way.

If you have children, you can have them sit down and make homemade cards to give to your relatives. Then when you get there it would be a great gesture to hand them a card that says "Welcome to Our Home."
