Snowbirds Heading South For the Winter

Snowbird is an affectionate term for retirees who migrate south for the winter months. There are some things that you need to do before leaving home for an extended length of time. Make sure your water lines are protected from freezing. Unplug all electrical appliances and turn off your air conditioner and water heater. Set your temperature thermostat at 55 degrees to keep pipes from freezing. Set your timers for indoor lamps to come on at dusk. Stop delivery of mail and newspaper to your home address. It's a good idea to ask a trusted friend or relative to check on your home while you're away. Provide them with a key to the house and a telephone number where you can be reached.

The snowbird population is growing, with the generation of "baby boomers" coming of age. With the influx of these "baby boomers" some of the snowbirds are looking at more exotic locations. Mexico is a favorite site among the "baby boomers". The climate is mild and depending on location there are bargains to be found if they are in the market for a home.

Some snowbirds enjoy traveling in their RVs and camping during the winter months. Favorite locations include Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana. Each state offers numerous attractions and natural parks for camping. Where these snowbirds decide to spend their winter months depend on their lifestyle and interests. If you like hiking, you would enjoy some of the national parks that have trails. Many locations offer swimming, whitewater rafting, and fishing.
