The most common name for retired, senior citizens who travel south for the winter is “snowbirds.” It's a name that has been around for many years. The term is used because they leave their homes in Northern states and head south for the cold, winter months. There are several Southern destinations that have adopted these snowbirds, with more and more elderly flocking to them to get warm in the winter.
One of the biggest areas for snowbirds is Florida. There are many areas in Florida that have snowbirds setting up temporary residence when temperatures drop elsewhere. A few of the Florida areas that are most popular for the retirees are Orlando, Tampa, Clearwater and Destin. These are very common areas for Northerners in the winter months.
Other destinations for snowbirds are areas like Phoenix, Scottsdale and Sedona in Arizona. Las Vegas, Nevada is also another popular winter nesting spot. Northerners have been known to travel long distances in the winter, closing up their northern homes, in order to head south. There are also destinations in California and Texas, like Santa Barbara and San Antonio. Some northerners have even been known to travel as far as Australia to get warm.
These elderly people, who love their homes in the northern states during the warmer months, have also grown accustomed to their warmer homes in the winter months. They hop in their RVs or simply take a flight. Either way, they pack up their belongings and head to warmer climates when the temperatures drop. Quite logically, when the temperatures begin to heat up in the South, they pack up and head north again.
