Snow Birds are people from places with cold weather who spend the winter in warmer climates. Some head for Florida, California, or Arizona, while others head further afield, like the Caribbean or Mexico.
Snow Birds started out mainly as senior citizens or retirees who could afford to be more comfortable in the winter by heading south. Of course, not everyone that comes down for the warmer weather are seniors. You have the wealthy who can travel anytime they like, or people who have saved up to take a winter vacation. And of course, you have college students who travel for Spring Break and hit the beaches. Some also come down for Thanksgiving and Christmas break.
Not all snow birds are temporary; many have taken up permanent residence in one of these warm places. Florida is one of the top retirement destinations for seniors, but the climate, beaches, and entertainment are appealing to younger people as well. However, it is typically easier for seniors to make the move, since the kids are grown up and they have already left the work force. Many also have retirement savings to draw from. Some seniors start out taking a month or six week vacation before they actually move to be sure they like the area and the fact that the climate will be warm all year round. Many live in retirement communities with lot of clubs and activities, while others prefer to remain on their own. Some even live in an RV or houseboat, allowing them the opportunity to travel.
