Make the Most of Holiday Family Visits

Holidays, especially Christmas, are about family. While many families use this time to enjoy the renewal of strong relationships, there are some gatherings that are quite dysfunctional. Care should be given to make the holiday a time of joyful celebration for all.

Consideration may be the key word for making the holiday season a time of memorable enjoyment. Family members know one another better than anyone else, so secrets of past conduct and personality problems can all come to the surface when people gather. If the focus is on the positive it will indeed be a time of fun for everyone.

Planning ahead can make for a wonderful time, especially if certain family members who are very good at preparing certain dishes are given assignments to bring those treats. Looking forward to the specialty of others can bring with it the excitement of seeing them. Since it’s the holiday season, it might even be a good idea to ask the senior member of the family to tell an appropriate story, either about the holiday or about the family.

To make sure that the spirit of peace on earth prevails in your time of family celebration, communicate to everyone how you feel about them. Focus on the gleeful expectations of the children and those people whom you haven’t seen since the last family gathering. Of course, it's always best to keep your consumption of alcohol to a minimum. Capitalize on the musical talents of the children, and most of all, remember that the reason for gathering isn’t about you.
