Many senior snowbirds flee the colder states such as Minnesota, Iowa, and North and South Dakota to escape the cold, ice and snowy conditions and head to Florida, Arizona, California and Texas. They usually like to leave in the first part of November before the weather turns cold and the snow falls. They will return home to enjoy spring in late April.
As we age, our bodies do not handle the cold or the possibility of falling. If an older person falls, it could mean they will be laid up all winter, or worst yet, they may never recover from the fall.
Many snow birds like the warmer climate because it allows them to go about their everyday lives without the hassle of snow. They do not have to shovel the cold stuff to get their cars out so they can get to their appointments or meet their friends for coffee. They do not have to worry about having heart aches because they worked to hard in the cold trying to shovel their sidewalks.
There are so many advantages for seniors to enjoy while heading south to a warmer climate. The warmer climate allows them to be very active outside. They are able to get the sun light that is needed to help ward off depression. It helps to increase their physical well being and boost their over all mood. They make new friends and can do many new activities while living in a retirement community. Many of the communities offer interesting events for the seniors to join. They have quilting clubs, card parties, bingo, golf, bird watching, walking and hiking groomed clean trails. Many of the seniors find themselves returning to the same area year after year to meet with their new friends.
