Many people regularly travel to the southern climates in the winter to escape the cold conditions in the north. Commonly referred to as “winter birds,” they flock south much like our winged friends to enjoy a respite from the snow and ice back home.
Most winter birds are retirees but also include people with medical conditions, those who just can't handle the hard winters of the north, or those that want to take advantage of the off season rates. The most popular destinations are Florida, Texas, and all along the Gulf Coast. If you think about it, the snow, wind, and ice are excellent inducements to go south to enjoy the sunshine, warm breezes, and ocean view. Instead of being bundled up in coats, scarves, several pairs of socks, boots, gloves, and beanies, you can enjoy shorts, t-shirts, bathing suits, and sandals. That sounds much better than layering on pounds of winter gear!
It has also been found that these southern migrations help those with pain, breathing problems, and arthritis. Doctors recommend their patients do this for their ailments, as the average temperatures along the Gulf, including Florida and south Texas, are 70 degrees in the winter months. A lot of people will go south in their RVs for the entire winter and come back north in the spring, thus avoiding the cold weather entirely.
With gas prices down, now is the perfect time to be a “winter bird” and flock south. Enjoy the warm weather and avoid the crowds while visiting your favorite places. Since this is considered “off season” in the south for regular vacationers, prices on meals, attractions and motel fares are lower than in the summer months.
