When we think of travel for retirees, we think of travel in the United States, usually by driving a car or recreational vehicle. There are many other places and ways to travel to see different parts of the world. One that has been popular with some is traveling on a freighter. One couple spent 20 months on a freight ship traveling around the world. More time than money is required for this method. The accommodations are good, but not luxurious. You eat dinner at the captain's table every night. The food is good but not fancy. At some of the ports, while the freighter unloads, the passengers can leave the ship and take tours of the area.
Seeing Europe by Eurailpass is another possible means of travel. Flexibility is required, but it is more relaxing than a rental car since driving and parking are very difficult. The trains are excellent in both quality and speed. In most cases you can sleep overnight on them to save time for sightseeing and save the cost of lodging. Its cost is not as much as hotel room would be. The Eurailpass can be bought for one month or two and you can travel on almost any train. However, many require reservations and there is a fee involved. The Eurailpass also covers ferry rides.
Another location that sounds interesting and lovely is the island of Malta, mainly rock. In Sliema, an interesting city, there is a good shopping center. The second language is English, and they like the English people. It is quiet in the evenings, perfect for retirees. The easiest way to get around is by bus even though the roads are bumpy. Harbour cruises and boat trips are available and worthwhile. The weather is lovely in May.
