As we become seniors we seem to acquire more prescription drugs. When we are planning a trip, it is imperative that we prepare our medications. See your doctor at least two weeks before you are to go on your trip. Your doctor will know if you need anything specifically for air travel if you are doing any flying.
If you are going to be on a long flight, such as to Hawaii or Australia, you should wear support hose to ward off any possibility of blood clots in your legs. You also need to walk around the airplane a minimum of once every hour to keep your circulation going. The air in a plane is dry so you should drink lots of water before and during the flight. Don't worry about relieving yourself. A trip to the rest room can count as a trip around the plane.
You should have a list of all of your medications, including herbs and non-prescription medications you may be taking. List the milligrams, how often you take then, how you take them, such as with water or needle, and what they are for. Take all of your prescription drugs in their original bottles. That will have the name and number of the pharmacy where they were purchased, which can be very useful.
If you are crossing time zones, investigate and make a list of when you should take your medications. To guard against infection, take plenty of alcohol-based hand sanitizer and wash your hands as often as possible. In your journal of your trip be sure and list what and when you took your medications. Doing these things will help assure you of a healthy and happy trip. Bon Voyage!
