The holidays can be extremely stressful for many people but if you plan ahead you can make things a lot easier. For starters, take into consideration where you would like to spend your time. If you are married you can split your time equally between both families or perhaps alternate your time with each. Next think about how long you will be staying. Then decide what accommodations you will use, whether it be a hotel, an RV or perhaps staying at your relatives home. Other things to think about is what and where you will be eating, and how much it will cost for travel or fuel.
Many families find it difficult to deal with the many questions relatives ask about personal issues. One way to handle those situations may be to initiate the conversation and direct the topic away from yourself and onto something else like the weather or a favorite movie you recently saw. Try to maintain a sense of humor and be sure to get plenty of rest. This will help reduce the stress of being tired and irritable. Focus on the children and do some fun activities with them to prevent boredom and possible arguing.
Finally, if you find that getting together with your relatives is too tense and stressful, then just invite a few friends and family over to your home. Start your own holiday traditions, like taking a trip or going caroling together. Perhaps you could even decide to just stay home and relax, without any outside interruptions. Whatever you choose to do, make it special and memorable for yourself and your family and leave the drama behind.
